![]() Wind turbines require land area, so on-site wind power generation usually occurs for projects having space for installing the turbines. Most wind turbines are designed for an operating life of up to 20years. If the site has a class 4 or greater wind resource, wind may be a good option and even larger, utility-scale turbines may provide economic options. If the site has a class 3 wind resource, consider small wind turbine (100 kW or less) or large, low wind speed turbine opportunities. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the specific area of interest before deciding to invest in wind systems. Wind resource maps can determine if an area of interest should be further explored, but wind resource at a micro level can vary significantly. Wind resource is classified according to its potential to produce electricity over an annual basis (Table 2.2). Similarly, wind turbines can produce energy at all hours of the day, but only when the wind is present. With solar panels, you obviously will not be able to produce energy during the nighttime hours, and extended cloudy periods will significantly reduce the power you can collect. The problem with choosing between wind and solar is that you limit the amount of energy that your home can produce. In 2017, over 21% of the renewable energy produced in the US came from wind power, while 7% came from solar power. On a national level, we are making progress. ![]()
